With over a decade at the Isle of Man Ship Registry, Ilja now leads as Principal Marine Surveyor, overseeing global survey operations and helping clients navigate the choppy waters of compliance, safety, and technical innovation. From legislative guidance to shipboard solutions, he makes sure vessels stay safe, compliant, and (preferably) afloat. As a Senior Surveyor, Ilja has a few hundred audits and inspections under his belt.

Ilja holds an Engineer’s degree in Nautical Science and began his career as a deck officer on gas carriers and Ro-Ro vessels. Before joining the Registry, he worked as business development manager and an independent surveyor, mostly in insurance claims and condition surveys - developing both a keen eye for detail and a healthy distrust of anything labelled "minor damage."

He’s at his best working on projects that blend people and progress: he’s been a driving force behind developing the Crew Matters wellbeing app for seafarers and led the regulatory work for wind-assisted propulsion systems like AirWing and WindWings - helping operators reduce costs and emissions without falling foul of the rules.

Outside the office, Ilja performs in local theatre and once won Best Supporting Actor at the Welsh Short Film Festival. He also dabbles in stand-up comedy, music production, and the occasional DJ set - though rarely at the same time. At home, he grows tomatoes, flowers, and philosophical questions - often while waiting for the Manx rain to stop (which, he assures us, it eventually does).
